The Opportunity
This position works out of our Ottawa, Ontario location in the Point of Care, Diagnostics division. Our Point of Care diagnostic portfolio spans key health and therapeutic areas, including infectious disease, cardiometabolic, informatics and toxicology. Our Ottawa office has an opportunity for a Technician, Intermediate (Chemistry). The position involves a primary production role and assisting in day-to-day activities to enhance shift efficiency. Responsibilities include participating in laboratory activities, serving as the main contact for manufacturing issues, optimizing technician placement, ensuring materials and equipment readiness for the next shift, providing feedback on production progress, and maintaining compliance with workplace procedures and safety guidelines. The role also entails assisting with health and safety audits, organizing engineering experiments and equipment maintenance, problem-solving, and ensuring audit readiness in manufacturing areas. Adherence to quality and environmental, health, and safety policies, participating in production projects and process changes, and communicating suggestions for process improvements to leadership are also part of the position. Miscellaneous duties may also be assigned as needed.
What You’ll Do
In addition to a primary production role, incumbent will assist within day-to-day activities and promote overall shift efficiency.
Participates in the day-to-day activities within the laboratory. This includes (but is not limited to): equipment checks, cleaning, autoclaving, stocking the lab with necessary raw materials and lab supplies as per documented procedures.
The first point of contact for all manufacturing issues in absence of Lead Hand and Senior Tech
Acts as a resource to Manufacturing and test areas on issues of chemical preparations and solution quality. Maintains internal contacts with other process groups.
Plans and implements the effective position of Techs across processes in order to optimize output.
Focuses on next shift success by ensuring materials, solution stocking guidelines are being met, and equipment is prepared for incoming shift.
Provides feedback to Lead Hand and Supervisor on the progress and barriers to achieving production goals.
Monitors product flow, raw materials and other key consumables in designated area and manages them to meet production targets.
Follows and ensures compliance to workplace operating and environmental, health and safety procedures and guidelines.
Assists with regular Health and Safety audits in area of responsibility recording and reporting findings to Lead and Supervisor.
Assists in organizing engineering experiments, planned equipment maintenance, and planned lab shutdowns.
Solves problems using technical knowledge and commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within a given area or function.
Ensures Chemistry manufacturing areas meet audit readiness.
Understands and complies with Quality and EH&S policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Acts as a role model and ensures operating procedures are followed.
Participates in production projects and process changes as directed by Supervisor.
Communicates ideas and suggestions for improving processes to leadership and actively participates in implementing solutions.
Other miscellaneous duties as may be required.
Required Qualifications
2–3-years college diploma in a related field.
1-3 years relevant work experience in a technical job preferred.
Ability to plan, organize and prioritize own daily work to meet established schedule.
Detail-oriented.
Resourcefulness, ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
Work independently in accordance with standard practices, policies, and precedents; seek direction when needed.
Communicate ideas and suggestions for improving processes; actively participate in implementing solutions.
A knowledge of safety and health procedures.
Knowledge of Quality requirements within a regulated, GMP environment.
Familiarity with any of the following is an asset: analytical chemistry, chemistry techniques and equipment.
4X4 A Shift Extended, working a rotating schedule of four days on four days off, from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm.
