Biologics Drug Product Development Internship Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

The Biologics Drug Product Development department is within the AbbVie Bay Area (ABA) Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) Biologics department. This group is responsible for formulation and drug product process development that are required for developing stable and fit-for-purpose biologic drug products. This graduate level internship will focus on exploring novel excipients for developing high concentration protein drug products and stabilizing labile proteins.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and characterize biologic drug product formulations using various assays (visual appearance, subvisible particles, protein content, SEC-HPLC, cIEF and others)
  • Perform literature review to guide the experimental study design
  • Plan and execute experiments including formulation and drug product process development
  • Analyze and interpret research data and present conclusions
  • Ensure compliance to safety rules and regulations and experimental and laboratory best practices
  • Maintain a detailed and organized electronic laboratory notebook
  • Share findings in technical presentations and technical report

This internship will be based in South San Francisco, CA.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other related field
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship
  • A strong technical background encompassing protein/peptide chemistry, chemical and physical stability, and formulation development
  • Experience in experimental design and execution as well as interpretation of data generated via a wide variety of analytical techniques
  • Excellent team player with strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expected graduation date between December 2025 – June 2026
  • Prior experience in development of protein formulations
  • Exposure to or familiarity with lyophilization
  • Hands on experience with various biophysical and analytical techniques used for protein characterization and stability testing
  • Knowledge of statistics and familiarity with statistical software like JMP or SAS
  • Exposure to protein characterization techniques
  • Strong problem-solving skills
