Job Description

We are seeking a scientist responsible for performing flow cytometry and high content imaging in Neuroscience Drug Discovery. This will be a highly collaborative role, with opportunities to work on multiple projects across AbbVie as well as external collaborations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to matrixed teams by supporting flow cytometry and flow sorting experiments in collaboration with neuroscience colleagues. This includes FACS of nuclei from mouse and human postmortem brain, generation of new cell lines based on fluorescent markers, and FACS for pooled whole-genome CRISPR screening.
  • Operate and work with field service engineers to maintain flow cytometry and sorting equipment.
  • Operate and work with field service engineers to maintain high content imaging equipment.
  • High-content imaging data management, provide guidance to colleagues on imaging experiment design, execution, and analysis.
  • Generate, analyze, and present reproducible data and participate in the interpretation of results. Maintain well-organized records.
  • Read and apply relevant scientific literature.
  • Develop scientific and technical proficiency as necessary for project completion.
  • Contribute to writing of publications, presentations, and patents.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and 10 years of experience; or Master’s Degree or equivalent education and 8 years of experience; or completion of PhD.
  • Experience with flow cytometry or flow sorting.
  • Experience with immunocytochemistry and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  • Experience in cell/molecular biology techniques such as cell culture, immunofluorescence, Western blotting, qPCR, transfection/transduction.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and execute experiments, interpret data, and identify appropriate follow-up strategies.
  • Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, initiative, and scientific integrity.
  • Strong organizational skills that facilitate planning, multitasking and working within timelines.
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journal(s)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong experience in hands-on use of flow cytometry and flow sorting instruments; analysis of flow cytometry data.
  • 2+ years experience in high content imaging and automation in biotech/pharmaceutical company environment, with hands-on experience in small-molecule/genetic-based phenotypic screens.
  • Strong scientific background in: neuroscience of neurodegeneration, migraine, psychiatry, and the molecular and cellular drivers of disease.
