Moving mountains together – as Scientist II/ Senior Scientist I - Screening Biology / Imaging Assay Development (24 months temporary / full- or part-time)

At AbbVie’s Research Center in Ludwigshafen, Germany, we strive to discover breakthrough treatments for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and psychiatric disorders by targeting key mechanisms with world-leading small molecule and biologic drug discovery capabilities.

We are seeking a talented scientist to lead high content imaging efforts using iPSC-derived neurons and advance imaging assay development. This collaborative role offers opportunities to contribute to multiple projects within AbbVie's innovative in-vitro drug discovery programs.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assay Development and Execution: Develop, optimize, and execute cellular assays independently to support target identification and validation, as well as compound characterization for drug discovery in neurological diseases.
  • Cell Culture Work: Conduct laboratory tasks in cell culture, including preparations of cell lines and hiPSC-derived cells for plate-based screenings.
  • Imaging and Analysis: Use immunofluorescence staining techniques, microscopy for image acquisition, and software-based image analysis to drive research. Plan and conduct experimental assays for optimization and screening using high-content imaging technologies.
  • Productivity and Excellence: Maintain high productivity and drive scientific excellence and technological advancement while adhering to experimental standards in the lab.
  • Data Management and Presentation: Generate, analyze, and integrate high-quality data to ensure reliable results for research progression. Present findings to both discipline-specific and cross-functional project teams.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement: Establish new assays and technologies to promote continuous improvement and innovation in research practices.
  • Collaboration and Cross-Functionality: Collaborate across functions, acting as a liaison between scientists and medicinal chemists locally and at global research sites to facilitate integrated research efforts.

Qualifications

  • Scientist II: BS or equivalent education with typically 7 or more years of experience or MS or equivalent education with typically 5 or more years of experience.
  • Senior Scientist I: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and typically, 10 years of experience, Master’s Degree or equivalent education and typically 8 years of experience, PhD and no (some) experience necessary
  • Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture, particularly with hiPSC-derived cells and their differentiation into neurons, astrocytes, and microglia.
  • Strong proficiency in immunofluorescence staining and imaging techniques, along with experience in microscopy image processing and analysis.
  • Familiarity with drug discovery, assay development, and high-content imaging techniques is advantageous.
  • Experience in data handling and the use of programming software such as RStudio is preferred.
  • Background in neurodegenerative or neuropsychiatric diseases is a plus.
  • Highly motivated, self-driven, and results-oriented, with excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of flexibility, willing to adapt to different projects and collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Encourages and nurtures innovation, with the capability to manage ideas from concept to reality.
  • Strong team player with the ability to build and maintain networks with peers both within and outside of the team to foster high performance.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English is required; proficiency in German is an asset.
