Job Description
The Ophthalmology Discovery group at AbbVie is seeking a Principal Scientist I/II to design and implement preclinical in vivo studies for identifying, validating, and characterizing potential therapeutic targets in support of ophthalmic drug discovery and development. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to strategy implementation for target discovery and validation in ophthalmology. As a multidisciplinary team member, the candidate will develop and implement innovative, translatable animal models for Age related degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma diseases with clinically relevant endpoints. They will lead a team in creating disease models using surgical, laser, drug, chemical, or genetic techniques, and in selecting and optimizing suitable endpoints. Additionally, the candidate will manage data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting for nonclinical in vivo pharmacology studies. Experience in ophthalmology or pharmacology is highly desirable. A thorough understanding of ophthalmic disease models, functional vision assessments, and imaging modalities is greatly valued. Prior experience in drug discovery and development is an asset. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with peers across multidisciplinary programs or project teams and offer advice and consultation to other scientists in R&D as well as external collaborators.
This candidate is expected to provide advice and consultation to other scientists in R&D as well as external collaborators and work with the Eye Care Research leadership team to help set strategy. They may serve as the pharmacology representative on nonclinical and translational sub-teams and assignments, acting as a subject matter expert on behalf of AbbVie in external collaborations. They will also be responsible for training and supervising junior staff members.
The candidate should be highly motivated, with a proven record of innovation and scientific leadership. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating scientific leadership skills and functioning effectively within a matrixed organizational structure. They should have a history of successful cross-functional collaborations and possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
Specific responsibilities:
- Design and conduct in vivo nonclinical pharmacology studies.
- Analyze, interpret, and report in vivo pharmacology datasets.
- Provide input to drive decisions to advance Discovery projects.
- Provide subject matter expertise in animal models of ocular diseases and ocular and visual functions.
- Represent Research Pharmacology on project teams.
- Advise and consult with other scientists in R&D as well as outside collaborators.
- Manage people, including employee engagement and career development.
- Active scientific participation and collaboration with colleagues in industry and academia
Qualifications
- Extensive expertise in preclinical ophthalmology models.
- Proficient in conducting functional vision assessments.
- Experience in ophthalmic imaging techniques and their application in pharmacological studies.
- Experience with various ocular imaging methods is highly desirable, including angiography, autofluorescence, fundus and vitreal photography, ocular coherence tomography (OCT), slit lamp biomicroscopy, gonioscopy, specular microscopy, ultrasonography, and ophthalmoscopy.
- Highly organized and experienced in documenting experimental plans, budgets, timelines, and technical reports.
- Capable of multitasking efficiently and adaptable to shifting priorities.

- Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills.

Education
Principal Research Scientist I
- BS or equivalent education and extensive, Typically, 14+ years of experience; MS or equivalent education with typically 12+ years of experience; PhD with typically 6+ years of experience in area or scientific area of discipline.
Principal Research Scientist II
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science related field with 16 years of related work; Master’s Degree Science or PharmD with 14 years of related work; PhD in Science or related field with 8 years of related work experience.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
