Position Overview
Adaptive is seeking an exceptional Scientist I to join our subsidiary, Digital Biotechnologies Inc. The Scientist I will play a critical role in helping to develop a “Next” Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) instrument specifically designed for clinical medicine. Existing methods for high-throughput sequencing are not suitable for many clinical applications, as all current NGS platforms lack the combination of high accuracy, rapid turnaround time, and low cost that would lead to robust clinical utility. In collaboration with academic and industry scientists across the country, Digital Biotechnologies is engineering the first solid-state sequencer with the specifications necessary for a widely applicable clinical sequencing instrument. This position will manage, design, and coordinate research-focused experiments that leverage Digital’s novel intellectual property to realize the company’s strategic objectives in fundamental science, health care and business development.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Investigate the mechanisms of electroporation through solid-state nanopores - this role is ideal for someone passionate about applying scientific principles to solve real-world challenges in biophysics and nanotechnology.
- Design, synthesize, and characterize advanced nanostructures, methods, and models, utilizing mastery of standard principles, theories, and techniques to solve specific problems and create unique solutions in collaboration with a team of other researchers.
- Design and conduct experiments to explore electroporation processes in solid-state nanopore systems.
- Collaborate onsite with lab scientists to analyze data and assist in experimental design.
- Independently analyze data, interpret results, and develop next steps.
- Prepare presentations and report findings to outside teams and senior leadership.
- Facilitate transfer of developed methods to development and production laboratories, prepare documentation including SOP and forms.
- Effectively prioritize and manage multiple experiments of varying size and scope.
- Be a source of expertise for cutting edge nanopore technology, biosensors, and electroporation techniques
- Be a problem solver: communicate well, ask questions, proactively eliminate bottlenecks, and be the person people go to when they want a job done right.
Education Requirements
- Master’s degree in biophysics, nanotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, physics, engineering (bio-, electrical, chemical, or materials) or related field AND with 8+ years of laboratory experience
or
- PhD in biophysics, nanotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, physics, engineering (bio-, electrical, chemical, or materials) or related field
Additional Requirements
- Experience with electroporation and solid-state nanopore technology
- Ability to synthesize complex concepts to generate hypothesis-driven research questions
- Maintains broad knowledge of scientific principles and theories and possesses intellectual mastery of one or more scientific areas
- Independently analyze data, interpret results, and develop next steps
- Develops an understanding of other areas and related dependencies
- Effectively prioritize and manage multiple experiments of varying size and scope
- Proven critical thinking and ability to independently manage projects and experiments, compare multiple approaches, and make selections based on their applicability to achieve project goals
Preferred
- Competency with microfabrication and characterization techniques of complex, multilayer, thin film structures, such as photolithography, electron beam lithography, and scanning electron microscopy
- Experience with wide range of molecular biology techniques: PCR, nucleic acid isolation, qPCR, NGS
- Experience with simulation of physical systems (e.g., COMSOL)
- Experience in presenting work to immediate supervisors and outside teams, report and SOP writing, project transfer and document preparation
Compensation
Salary Range: $89,100 - $133,700
