Director, Ethics and Compliance

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Global Rare Business Unit and Medical Affairs/R&D, the Global Rare Business Unit (GRBU) Compliance Director, International Markets will support the design, implementation, and enhancement of an effective Ethics and Compliance program for the Global Rare Business Unit in the countries under the position’s geographic responsibility. The GRBU Compliance Director, International Markets, will work closely with colleagues in the broader International and Global Ethics & Compliance team, with Global Rare Cluster Leads and their Medical Affairs counterparts and their field teams throughout Europe and the Nordics, and with Legal, Internal Audit, HR, IT, Finance colleagues to sustain Alnylam’s strong ethical culture.
This position is based at the Zug, Switzerland affiliate and is a hybrid position requiring 2-3 days a week in the office.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with leadership teams and stakeholders to maintain and further develop a strong culture of ethics and compliance, including personal accountability at all levels in the organization with a spirit of partnership and positive problem solving;
- Develop and evolve the Ethics & Compliance program in regional activities and projects to ensure consistency with Alnylam values and principles, fitness for purpose and compliance with applicable requirements;
- Maintain a current understanding of regulatory and compliance trends and changes in law and/or guidelines in European and Nordic markets, and to advise local management of trends affecting their activity
- Draft and/or update appropriate policies to ensure alignment with global policies and compliance with applicable laws, regulations and industry codes;
- Participate in implementation and maintenance of transparency reporting requirements and partner with business leadership in meeting reporting obligations;
- Contribute to implementation and execution of regional and local risk based third party due diligence;
- Foster a data protection culture within the organization and help to implement essential elements of data protection laws and regulations applicable in regional projects and in the countries under your scope;
- Prepare and deliver training and education to ensure understanding of employee responsibilities and ethics, compliance and data privacy issues, as well as related policies and procedures;
- Execute routine and risk-based monitoring and auditing of relevant business activities and related policies and procedures; identify potential areas of ethics, compliance and data privacy vulnerability and risk; assist in and oversee the implementation of corrective action plans as necessary; and generate reports on monitoring, auditing and risk assessment;
- Support investigations into allegations of misconduct, as required;
- Assist the Sr. Director, International TTR Compliance Lead, and the International TTR Compliance Team, as necessary; and
- Other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time at the company’s discretion to support the implementation of Alnylam’s global compliance program.
Qualifications
- An unwavering commitment to integrity and maintaining the highest professional ethics;
- Bachelor’s Degree required (Legal or equivalent degree preferred);
- At least 10 years’ ethics, compliance and/or legal experience in an organization subject to biopharmaceutical, medical device or other relevant healthcare compliance laws and regulations;
- Knowledge of foreign healthcare fraud and abuse laws (e.g., U.K. Bribery Act (2010), U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, IFPMA Guidelines) and relevant Data Privacy legislation (e.g., GDPR) required;
- Experience with transparency reporting a plus;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally in a team environment with a wide variety of company personnel and across the broader organization on a broad range of matters, including physicians, scientists and individuals of different nationalities;
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to flourish in a fast-paced and high energy environment;
- Ability to work independently and to manage and oversee discrete areas of responsibility with little direct supervision;
- Experience in managing outside consultants;
- Able to thrive in a proactive ethical culture in which compliance and business objectives are mutually reinforcing; strong motivation and ability to champion a comprehensive compliance program that is integrated well with the Company’s business and culture;
- Excellent organizational, communication (verbal and written – fluency in English required, any other additional language a plus) and prioritization skills, including the ability to communicate concisely, to integrate legal and business considerations, and to provide balanced advice regarding risks; and Travel globally and regionally will be required
