Position Summary:
The Manager will serve as a customer facing field medical lead to the medical/scientific community and will be responsible for establishing, developing and maintaining engagements and collaborations with prominent experts and clinicians in assigned geographic areas in Japan.
This entrepreneurial role requires a high level of collaboration across Rare disease brand team including development, commercial, market access and patient advocacy.
The individual will ensure the appropriate and timely dissemination of clinical and scientific information regarding both marketed and pipeline compounds in a timely, ethical, and customer-focused manner. The individual will implement clinical and educational strategies in collaboration with colleagues to support company-sponsored trials and educational initiatives, including investigator-sponsored studies.
The Manager will work to compliantly triage HCPs’ educational and research needs with approved available resources and provide the latest emerging data in response to specific medical inquiries. This position will play an important self-starter role in helping to establish Amgen’s Medical Affairs presence in Japan and to execute on strategic medical plan and buildout for Japan.
Responsibilities:
- Network and partner with important external customers, including medical thought leaders, academic institutions, large group practices, medical directors, managed care decision makers, and pharmacy directors in alignment with applicable compliance, legal, and regulatory guidelines.
- Understand, integrate and effectively communicate scientific/medical information and commercial value of Amgen’s products to the medical community and other key internal and external audiences.
- Prioritize and work effectively in a self-directed manner in a constantly changing environment, including ability to obtain, integrate, and communicate customer feedback.
- Pair customers’ unmet needs with available internal resources.
- Collaborate effectively with all functional areas to identify opportunities and needs that can be addressed via communication of scientific, medical, and health economic information.
- Identify potential new speakers and train on scientific content for Amgen-sponsored external speaker programs.
- Participate in national and regional conferences, meetings, and other scientific venues as appropriate to support the Medical/Clinical strategy and to obtain new competitive information, keep abreast of clinical trends, and support and maintain relationships with key investigators and scientific research.
- Working in conjunction with the medical affairs and clinical development teams, evaluate potential external clinical research collaboration opportunities and facilitate the conduct of external clinical investigator-sponsored studies (ISSs) and company-sponsored trials.
- Close cooperation with medical affairs, in collection of relevant information and elaboration of medical tactics and training.
- Monitor the competitive environment for advances and trends in our therapeutic areas, including new treatment management and new therapies, as well as competitive products and features and provide feedback to the senior leadership team on specific initiatives of competitors.
- Assuring appropriate deployment of field resources and that they are compliant with Amgen legal and all applicable regulatory guidelines to ensure medical and scientific accuracy and fair balance.
- Staying current with all required customer relationship management (CRM) systems and tools
- Meeting and exceeding KPIs (key performance index) for planned activities
Basic Qualifications and Skills Required:
- Advanced scientific or clinical degree (MD, PhD, NP, Pharm D, etc.) or commensurate experience required.
- Work experience in Medical Science Liaison, Medical Affairs or Clinical Development in the pharmaceutical industry, otherwise experience of scientific discussion and engagement in Marketing organization in pharmaceutical companies.
- Exceptional oral and written communication and interpersonal skills (including strong demonstration of ability to network) required.
- Ability to travel up to 60% for territory management, attendance at regional and national conferences/workshops, and attendance at company meetings.
- Must have ability to learn to use new business applications across hardware tools (e.g., PC, iPad).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- English speaking skill at minimum level
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 3 years previous pharmaceutical industry experience as an MSL or other Medical/Clinical Affairs role or a minimum of 3 years relevant clinical/scientific experience is preferred.
- Scientific expertise in the therapeutic area, related products, disease state, and interested in latest discoveries.
- Project management and presentation skills.
- Good knowledge of clinical research, drug safety, legal and compliance environment.
- English speaking skill at business level.
