*Hourly rate is an estimate only which includes shift differential for nights, evenings, or weekend shifts. Overall hourly rates will vary based on schedule.

Primary Purpose:

Provides services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works under the direction of a Bone Marrow Workflow Coordinator, MLT, or a Medical Technologist for the area. Assists during bone marrow collections to prepare specimens for testing.

Essential Functions:

Performs all responsibilities of Processing Technician I and II as defined by Job Description/Primary Purpose.

Prepares coverslip smears from bone marrow aspirates and indicates quality and number of spicules present.

Prepares touch prep coverslip slides with the bone marrow biopsy specimens.

Performs fingerstick smears.

Processes all bone marrow aspirate and biopsy samples and ensures that an adequate number of smears are made.

Ensures proper handling and processing of Bone Marrow aspirate and biopsy specimens.

Performs selected laboratory tests and/or procedures of a technical nature for more than one department for which he/she is qualified, trained, and demonstrates competency under appropriate direction.

Identifies direct causes (technical or instrumental) of problems and notifies the appropriate supervisor or designated individual.

Proficient in performing complex processing procedures defined within the department such as plating microbiological specimens, staining, and grossing.

Performs and documents quality control and equipment maintenance within predetermined parameters.

Enforces specimen rejection criteria when notified by Technicians. Notifies the appropriate supervisor or designated individual of specimens that meet the rejection criteria for inappropriate samples.

Resolves sample processing problems and communicates issues to appropriate Supervisor or designated individual.

Provides a liaison between clients/departments and other areas of ARUP.

Assists Processing Technicians and Solution Specialists. Communicates with other departments as required.

Issues credits for testing.

Answers telephone calls in a timely and courteous manner. Provides results available in the computer as requested to physicians, nurses, and laboratorians.

Trains others as defined, in functions for which Processing and Bone Marrow Technicians are responsible.

Meets output and quality measures as defined by individual group procedures. Assists others in areas of defined competency when assigned workload is complete.

Physical and Other Requirements:

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company/departmental policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Absolute integrity in the accurate identification of samples, test performance, and reporting of results

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.
