About the role

Job Description / Capsule

The GBS Data Office (GDO) supports Commercial and Enabling business areas.

The Data Governance & Policy team is responsible for supporting a range of data and AI governance activities to protect the company’s data assets, so that they can be used with confidence to maximize value, while legal, ethical and security aspects are safeguarded.

The Senior Manager leads a team of Data Governance and Policy Specialists, providing expertise, leadership and oversight. The role will coordinate and support data governance processes and initiatives for relevant business areas.

Typical Accountabilities

Team Management

  • Line manage a team of Data Governance & Policy Specialists within the GDO. Recruit and onboard new team members. Provide ongoing coaching and mentoring, support development and perform regular reviews

  • Engage with business, data governance, and IT colleagues to triage and coordinate issues and requests. Allocate work items, and monitor progress and effectiveness. Act as first line issue point

  • Ensure that SOPs, work aids and other information are complete, correct and kept up-to-date. Continuously improve ways of working by enhancing tools, methods, processes, documentation and controls within the team

  • Collate metrics and reporting for team activities. Provide updates to data management and user forums on progress of initiatives and issue resolution. Track value and provide reporting to GBS Operations

Data Governance Strategy and Operations

  • Develop robust, standardised GDO-wide processes to ensure that data governance activities are efficient and simple to engage with.

  • Be responsible for performance of data governance processes, standards, quality and compliance within relevant area(s).

  • Participate in GDO, Enterprise Data Office (EDO) and cross-business unit forums.

With the team and the wider GDO, provide governance services including:

Data Protection

  • Provide first line support to internal collaborators on privacy

  • Support process owners in documenting Records of Processing Activities (ROPA)

  • Support process owners and project teams in completing Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA)

  • Provide oversight of risks and mitigating actions identified in PIAs and Transfer Impact Assessments (TIA)

  • Create and run assurance activities for privacy processes

  • Engage with privacy SMEs within the GDO and AZ global privacy team to resolve complex queries and issues

Data Sharing and Partnerships

  • Manage requests and the process for data sharing with third parties, supporting and ensuring PIAs, TIAs, and other due diligence processes are complete. Facilitate data transfers and/or access as necessary

  • Provide support to process owners for managing cross-border data transfers

Data Asset Management

  • Identify, classify & prioritise Critical Data Assets and Critical Data Elements; ensure that critical data is appropriately documented

  • Define data access policies and responsibilities

  • Implement data access controls

  • Assure data disposal schedules and processes

  • Ensure data products adhere to business area and AZ global standards

Data Policy, Compliance and Risk Management

  • Facilitate the roll out of Enterprise data and AI policies and standards within defined business area(s)

  • Provide feedback and input on business area requirements for enterprise data policies, standards and guidelines

  • Perform regular maturity assessments against AZ Enterprise data standards; assure that prioritised mitigation or uplift actions are completed

  • Facilitate data and AI audits

  • Assure data and AI issue and risk registers

  • Provide data policy SME support to process owners and project teams

Community Engagement

  • Educate and publicise data governance concepts, polices and standards through presentations, GDO intranet site and AZ internal social media

  • Support central compliance areas (e.g. Privacy Office) in the creation and sharing of educational material

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Experience of line management and coaching a small team of experts

  • Foundational project management skills – ability to coordinate dependencies, monitor progress, manage risks/issues, and track outcomes

  • Experience of process design and change management

  • Ability to work to deadlines in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a data office, data governance or data management role

  • Knowledge of data protection principles and regulation (e.g. GDPR)

  • Strong knowledge of data management and data governance principles

  • Good administrative and organisational skills

  • Proficient in Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • Experience of maintaining information and documentation using collaboration tools (e.g. SharePoint)

  • Good attention to detail

  • Conceptual and strategic problem solver

  • Confident engaging and managing collaborators at all levels

  • Good communication, presentation and influencing skills

Desirable

  • Knowledge of user access and security principles

  • Experience of working in a complex, diverse global organisation

  • Domain knowledge of life sciences/pharmaceuticals; manufacturing; corporate finance; or sales & marketing

  • Knowledge of ethical and regulatory aspects of the use of data within AI and analytics

  • Experience with Collibra or other data catalogue technology

  • Experience of producing and delivering training
