Welcome to our Cambridge Biomedical Campus. This site combines world-class biomedical research, patient care and education on a single site location in the heart of Cambridge. The office will be within walking distance of the new purpose-built building that will bring together the company’s research and development activity in an innovative strategic R&D centre and global corporate headquarters. The building has been designed with the open architecture reflecting AstraZeneca’s collaborative approach to research. Open laboratories and clear glass walls will enable new ways of working across disciplines, whilst a central courtyard will put science on full display.

What you’ll do

You are the strategic leader defining priorities for new project investments working in partnership with disease area teams, clinical and strategic biology leaders. You will lead cross-discipline teams to build project proposals and will have oversight of, and shape, target identification, target validation and functional genomics efforts. You will be a senior expert in the next generation of oncology small molecule therapeutics, driving innovation and shaping the future portfolio. You will advise on scientific advances and assist leadership teams on future investments and business plans.

  • Recognised as an authority in cancer pathway and disease biology with accountability for taking the best small molecule targets into the portfolio.
  • Track-record of delivering on drug discovery and/or development projects with a strong understanding of clinical landscapes, new modalities and areas of high unmet need.
  • Building networks with internal and external experts to identify new drug discovery opportunities, leveraging opportunities and advising on investments.
  • Maintaining excellent partnerships with global and local discovery leaders to deliver high quality and timely new project investments.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving clinical landscapes and guide and advise on pre-clinical bioscience priorities. May act as a lead biologist on a drug project.

Essential for the role

  • PhD in a relevant scientific field
  • Extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry with direct experience of delivering on drug discovery and/or development projects.
  • An expert in cancer pathway and disease biology
  • Broad and comprehensive understanding of Oncology, therapeutic strategies and competitor landscape
  • Experience of running cross-discipline teams
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills

Desirable for the role

  • Line management and people leadership experience would be an advantage
  • Strong reputation within the industry coupled with a substantial publication record.
