US Sustainability Specialist

Primary Responsibilities

  • This role will directly support the Assoc. Director of Environment, Health, and Safety in the management of the EHS program for BioNTech’s facilities in the US, including Cambridge, MA and Gaithersburg, MD.
  • Program Management. Responsible for management of the sites’ Environmental Management System (ISO14001). Develop and update site sustainability and decarbonization plans outlining vision, direction and key initiatives, supported by an annual Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability operating plan and budget. Provide guidance and support to internal teams, fostering a culture of sustainability throughout the organization. Oversee process to collect and report out data related to key sustainability initiatives and program KPIs.
  • Project Management: Lead and coordinate sustainability projects and initiatives across US sites. Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment with sustainability objectives and drive implementation of sustainable practices. Work with cross-functional group leaders and committees, and external sustainability consultant(s) to analyze sustainability performance, develop and achieve key objectives. Management and execution of Green Labs programs, including training, reporting, sustainability initiative design and development, stakeholder management, and serving as a Green Lab ambassador.
  • Compliance and Reporting. Lead process for responding to inquiries and requests related to sustainability data, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and timely responses to stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. Stay informed about relevant sustainability regulations, ESG frameworks, certifications, and best practices. Support in the preparation and submission of sustainability reports as required by regulatory bodies and industry standards.
  • Emergency Management. Support development and review of emergency and crisis management program operational plans, related policies and procedures. Provide leadership, training, coaching, mentoring, and hands-on support relating to emergency preparedness and crisis management. Coordinate the site-level emergency response teams, including updates to curriculum, training, materials, and external trainer support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, architecture, sustainability or related field with 2-5 years’ related experience (preferably in a lab and/or manufacturing environment)
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental regulations, certifications, and energy and sustainability related regulations, Net Zero, WELL building standards, LEED, and project management.
  • Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills with ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and strong technical presentation ability. Effective communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience with EHS management systems, including ISO certification programs (14001, 50001)
  • Experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical or other health care industries desired.
