Dovetail Genomics, Cantata Bio is a Scotts Valley, CA-based start-up company developing cutting-edge genomics technologies and informatic solutions that enable epigenetic and genome biology fields. We are a diverse, talented, multi-disciplinary team innovating in the field of genomics, with the ultimate goal of leaving a lasting impact on the world by providing researchers and clinicians with tools to better inform biological understanding.

The unique data type produced with Dovetail assays is used in a range of applications including improved genome assembly, discovery of structural variation, and elucidation of epigenetic regulatory networks. Our bioinformatics scientists explore and develop novel genomics solutions that support and expand applications of the Dovetail data. The computational biology team is a critical interface between R&D and customer-oriented products.

Job opportunity

We are looking for an outstanding Bioinformatics Scientist to drive the development of new clinical applications of Cantata Bio’s proximity ligation technology. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing advanced NGS-based analytical methods, ideally with a focus on cancer genomics. Prior experience with proximity ligation (Hi-C) is not required, but it is expected that it will be picked up quickly. Candidate will apply their broad background & experience to tackle challenging biological problems, propose & implement data-driven analytical solutions, and design in silico and/or wet lab experiments to validate their methods. This position will interact closely with colleagues in computational biology, molecular biology, and commercial teams.

This role is located in our Scotts Valley based offices

What you will do:

  • Develop novel analytical methods that leverage the capabilities of the Dovetail datatype for genetic variation discovery.
  • Contribute to internal research goals, tool building, and problem solving.
  • Contribute to external academic collaborations and strategic alliances by creating tailored output to focused scientific questions often including contributions to peer reviewed manuscripts.
  • Regularly present your work both internally and externally, effectively communicating your methods and results to audiences with diverse scientific and non-scientific backgrounds.
  • Clearly document your methods and experimental results.
  • Align closely with and report into the Director of Computational Biology.

Who you are:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, or equivalent. Postdoctoral and/or industry experience is a major plus.
  • You have extensive experience with processing and analysis of NGS data (genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics), with a thorough understanding of their application in genetic variant discovery. HiC-based data processing skills are an added bonus, but not a must.
  • Proven track record of thinking beyond the available tools to develop unique tools customized to the needs of the product and/or customer.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Essential skills:

  • Expertise in Python programming and demonstrated ability to learn and adopt bioinformatics techniques and resources.
  • Experience with numerical, visualization, and bioinformatics software modules (e.g., numpy, seaborn/matplotlib, BioPython, etc.).
  • Experience designing and implementing bioinformatics workflows with a modern workflow management language (e.g., Nextflow).
  • Experience with version control using git; experience with git-based collaboration tools (GitHub highly preferred).
  • Comfortable working in a Linux-based compute environment and experience with common CLI tools and scripting languages (e.g., bash, awk).
  • Experience with containerizing tools and workflows, preferably using Docker.
  • Experience working in a cloud-computing environment (AWS highly preferred).
  • Excellent English written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.

Desirable skills:

  • Strong knowledge of cancer genomics & biology, including relevant tools (e.g., Manta, STAR-fusion, Sniffles,) and databases (e.g., TCGA, cBioPortal, COSMIC, etc).
  • Experience with alternative sequencing technologies (e.g., long read, Hi-C, linked read, etc.).
  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning methods and their application in biology & bioinformatics.

As a full-time Cantata Bio employee, you will receive Fortune 500 level benefits including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, matching 401k plan, as well as paid holidays, sick time, and generous vacation. You will work in a beautiful facility nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains with walking paths and on-site health club. There will be cake. Local applicants are preferred.
