Purpose
The Associate/Snr Associate/Manager PR&D Import Export Services, located in Cork, Ireland, plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of Lilly’s Product Research and Development (PR&D) Import Export Services team. Reporting to the PR&D Trade Compliance Leader, this position ensures adherence to international and U.S. import/export regulations, including those of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Partner Government Agencies such as the FDA, USDA, EPA, and USFWS. The role facilitates the global supply of materials for Research and Development and clinical trials by coordinating logistics, documentation, and trade compliance support for PR&D shipments. Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders—such as the PR&D, Clinical Development Design and Analytics (CDDA) and Clinical Supply and Delivery (CSD) organizations—as well as vendors, contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs), and third-party logistics providers, the Associate/Snr Associate/Manager serves as a point of contact to expedite U.S. imports and exports, secure necessary documentation, and address shipment-related challenges. Additionally, this position provides operational assistance on international shipping and foreign trade compliance matters, leveraging subject matter experts and resources like the online customer kiosk to deliver guidance on tariff classifications, customs valuations, country of origin, delivery terms, and issue resolution, thereby enabling efficient trial execution across Lilly’s global portfolio.
Primary Responsibilities
This role provides execution-level support for PR&D Import Export Services. It focuses on assisting PR&D and CSD with daily trade compliance and logistics tasks, contributing to Lilly’s mission of delivering life-changing medicines around the world. This job description outlines general expectations at the time of drafting. Responsibilities may evolve over time based on increasing workload and demands, and additional duties may be assigned in consultation with and under the oversight of the PR&D Trade Compliance Leader.
Daily Operations
- Support the PR&D Import Export Services team and the PRD Trade Compliance Leader in ensuring import/export transactions comply with international and U.S. regulations, including U.S. CBP and other Partner Government Agencies (e.g., FDA, USDA).
- Act as a point of contact for vendors, CMOs, and shippers exporting materials to or from Lilly PR&D sites, coordinating documentation and feedback to facilitate smooth customs clearance.
- Assist shippers and internal partners (e.g., PR&D Outsourcing, Scientists, Procurement, Regulatory, International Logistics) in providing required import/export and trade compliance-related data, such as tariff classifications, customs values, and country of origin markings.
- Maintain accurate records of shipments and compliance documentation per regulatory and Lilly standards.
- Assist in determining appropriate tariff classifications (e.g., HTSUS for U.S. imports, HS codes for EU and international shipments) to ensure accurate customs declarations and compliance with applicable trade regulations.
Additional Responsibilities
- Monitor and tracking shipment statuses, escalating high-priority issues (e.g., delays, customs holds) to the PR&D Import Export Services team and Trade Compliance Leader and collaborating with couriers or CMOs to promptly and timely resolve them.
- Provide operational support for various R&D and clinical trial shipments, ensuring documentation meets U.S. and international trade compliance requirements.
- Support the PR&D Import Export Services team and the PR&D Trade Compliance Leader in fostering innovation by identifying opportunities to streamline import/export processes and enhance operational performance, driving efficiency and effectiveness in support of Lilly’s PR&D and CDDA objectives.
- Assist in maintaining the PR&D Import Export Services site, updating content based on team guidance and customer feedback.
- Contribute to compliance processes by supporting audits, training vendors/CMOs as directed, and integrating trade compliance into business partner workflows.
- Utilize pharmaceutical database systems such as BioVia Insight, as well as enterprise systems like SAP, SharePoint, and LANs, to support daily operations under the guidance of the PR&D Import Export Service team and the PR&D Trade Compliance Leader.
- Engage with Lilly teams across the U.S., EU, and other relevant jurisdictions (e.g., North American Logistics, Clinical Supply and Delivery, including CT distribution teams) to foster trust-based relationships, strengthening collaboration and accelerating delivery timelines.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, as required, to optimize supplier information flows and facilitate the delivery of PR&D Import Export Services deliverables.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific, health-related, or logistics field, or equivalent experience.
- 3-5 years of experience in import/export, trade compliance, or logistics operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with pharmaceutical supply chains or clinical trial logistics.
- Working knowledge of U.S. and EU customs regulations, including compliance requirements enforced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and EU customs authorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), SAP, and SharePoint.
- Analytical skills to identify and address operational issues.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively under supervision in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal) with a strong customer-focused approach.
