The Cloud and Connectivity organization is actively looking for a VMware ESX Platform Operations Engineer to join them. Do you like to solve challenges and have an interest in large scale impact? Job Summary:
You will work in our Infrastructure Hosting Platform area developing and supporting the global technical operations of VMWare ESX based Infrastructure (IaaS) capabilities hosted on-premises along with Microsoft Azure.
You will work closely with the team to maintain optimal performance and stability of our virtual infrastructure, contributing to the reliability and efficiency of our services across the organization. This role will have the opportunity to work with the most critical infrastructure supporting all Lilly Manufacturing and research sites in multi-datacenter stretch clusters.
If you have a solid background in VMware administration, server virtualization, and thrive in dynamic enterprise environments, this role is for you. Our goal is to improve all aspects of our infrastructure availability and reliability through repeatable patterns, new architectural designs, improvements in observability to prevent outages to help increase value across the organization. The role will also provide guidance and direction to our global Lilly operations SMEs and connect with other platform infrastructure operations SME to deliver the daily operations associated with this area.

What You Should Bring
- Technical expertise and leadership to turn ideas and concepts into solutions. Linux, Windows, VMware vSphere, Dell SAN storage or Cloud certifications are a bonus, or we are willing to help you develop.
- Technical leadership supporting enterprise grade infrastructure solutions and leading the deployment at multiple global locations.
- Strong Hands-on experience with automated infrastructure availability and resiliency (VMWare/vSphere/Storage replication) at enterprise scale along with virtualized Windows or Linux OS platforms.
- Knowledge and experience with modern VMware ESX, Azure VMware Service, IaaS cloud services (EC2, Azure Compute), or languages and tools such as Python, JSON, YAML, ARM, Git is a bonus.
- Optimize, configure, and maintain private cloud infrastructure capabilities to help Build, Configure, and Maintain systems.
- Consistent track record of high quality, agile focused, team-based solution delivery.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and communication skills, working across global and diverse teams.
- Deep understanding of networking concepts like VLANs and trunking. Configure and manage VMware networking components, including Distributed Switches (vDS), to ensure efficient and secure network communication.
- Experience with Zerto and VMware HCX technologies is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Infrastructure Design and Implementation: Lead the design, deployment, and management of VMware environments to support critical business applications.
- Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering a collaborative work environment. Be able to lead and deliver small/medium scale projects like LCM’s, new Manufacturing sites, new tool implementations etc.,
- Performance Optimization: Ensure the optimal performance, scalability, and reliability of VMware infrastructures. Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
- Troubleshooting and Support: Provide advanced troubleshooting for complex issues and ensure timely resolution to minimize downtime in the Vmware Infrastructure.
- Automation and Scripting: Identify, develop and maintain automation scripts to streamline operations and improve efficiency.
- Capacity Planning: Conduct capacity planning and performance analysis to ensure the infrastructure can meet future demands.
- Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other teams, including platform,network, storage, and security teams, to ensure seamless integration and operation of systems.
- Incident, Change and Request Management: Lead incident response efforts and perform root cause analysis to prevent future occurrences. Ensure changes and requests are addressed in a timely fashion by the team.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in existing processes architecture and toolsets and implement enhancements to increase efficiency and reliability.
- Remote Support: Provide remote support to globally dispersed teams, ensuring consistent and reliable VMware services across all locations.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Certifications: VMware certifications such as VMware Certified Professional (VCP) are highly desirable. Additional certifications in related technologies are a plus.
- Experience: 5-15+ years of experience in VMware administration and operations within enterprise environments.
Technical Skills:
- VMware ESXi Proficiency: Expert in installation, configuration, and management of VMware ESXi hosts.
- VMware Tools: Extensive experience with vCenter Server, VMware Update Manager (VUM), and other VMware management tools.
- Virtualization Concepts: Understanding of virtualization technologies, including experience with virtual machine provisioning and resource management.
- Clustering Technologies: Strong understanding of HA, DRS clusters, and Metro Stretch Clusters.
- Server Clustering: Proven ability to add, modify, and delete server clusters within vCenters.
- Networking Skills: Proficient in networking concepts such as VLANs, trunking, and VMware networking components like Distributed Switches (vDS).
- Physical Hardware Knowledge: Experience managing physical hardware from various vendors, ensuring optimal operation through regular patching and firmware updates.
- Automation Expertise: Skilled in scripting and automation using tools like PowerShell, Python, and familiarity with automation platforms.
Additional Skills:
- Cloud Services: Knowledge and experience with Azure VMware Service and IaaS cloud services like AWS EC2 and Azure Compute.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues effectively.
- Time Management: Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Customer Focus: Commitment to providing high-quality service and support to internal stakeholders.
- Modern Toolsets: Familiarity with new-age management and monitoring tools.

Desirable Skills:
- Cloud Services Exposure: Basic understanding of cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
- Storage Technologies: Knowledge of storage solutions and how they integrate with VMware environments.
- Monitoring Tools: Experience with monitoring and management tools for infrastructure health.
- OS Proficiency: Knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems.
- Scripting Languages: Familiarity with JSON, YAML, ARM templates.
- Version Control Systems: Familiarity with version control systems like Git is a plus.

Additional Information:
- Role located in Hyderabad (relocation required)
- Availability to work flexible work hours is/may be required. This team will support continuous operations across two shifts and therefore, this role will require non-standard work hours, and some work on weekends and holidays.
