Role Summary

The mission of the FP&A function is to “provide financial insights to drive business decisions.” The Associate Director, Financial Planning & Analysis plays a critical leadership role in ensuring this mission is fulfilled by delivering forward-looking insights, ensuring strategic financial alignment, and driving business value across the organization.

This position leads key areas of financial planning and performance management for the Japan affiliate, including full P&L ownership, consolidation of the Japan market and R&D financials, and oversight of alliance finance. The Associate Director also drives cross-functional strategic initiatives and serves as a key finance contact to the global organization, ensuring alignment with global finance strategies.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the financial planning and analysis function in Japan, including annual budgeting, long-range planning, and rolling forecast processes for both the Japan market and Japan-based R&D functions.
• Consolidate and manage the full Japan P&L, Japan Market and R&D perspectives to provide a comprehensive financial view.
• Provide strategic financial support and act as a senior finance business partner to the Commercial, Medical Affairs and R&D functions.
• Oversee alliance finance activities and lead financial interactions with partners to ensure alignment on budgeting, forecasting, and performance tracking.
• Drive financial aspects of ad hoc cross-functional global projects.
• Deliver timely, insightful financial analysis and reporting to senior leadership, enabling data-driven decision-making.
• Participate in senior leadership and strategic planning meetings, offering clear financial recommendations for resource allocation and prioritization.
• Collaborate closely with the global FP&A team to align Japan’s financial strategy with global objectives, ensuring consistency, compliance, and shared best practices.
• Provide leadership and coaching to FP&A team members, supporting their development and fostering a high-performance, collaborative culture.
• Ensure robust internal controls and compliance with financial policies and procedures, including those related to alliance management and order-to-cash (OTC).
• Monitor financial risks and opportunities and drive mitigation plans or initiatives to capture upside.

Reporting Line

This position reports to the Head of Finance, Japan, and works in close collaboration with the global Finance teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA and/or CPA preferred.
• 12+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, strategic finance, or related roles, ideally in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry.
• Proven experience in leading budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning processes across commercial and R&D functions.
• Strong understanding of alliance structures and experience managing financial interactions with external partners.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a track record of delivering actionable business insights.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
• High proficiency in English (written and spoken) and experience working in a global or matrixed environment.
• Proficiency in financial systems such as SAP and business intelligence tools is preferred.
• Strong leadership and team development skills; demonstrated ability to lead through change and complexity.
• Self-driven, organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
