How this role drives the company forward:
The Senior Staff Engineer, Systems Electrical is a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of the area(s) of expertise, resolving a wide range of issues in creative ways. This role independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. In this position, the professional works in collaboration with the engineering, molecular biology, and marketing teams to implement area(s) of expertise for new and existing instrumentation systems.

The Senior Staff Engineer, Systems Electrical is an on-site role located in San Jose, CA.

How you will make an impact:
The Senior Staff Engineer is expected to demonstrate strong fundamental knowledge in electrical engineering and applied physics concepts, be able to resolve difficult technical problems, and have the skills to communicate broadly across engineering teams. Specifically, you will be working on developing complex multi-disciplinary instruments for single cell dispensing by selecting and implementing sound design solutions, ensuring maximum performance, safety, and efficacy as well as addressing the voice of our customers.

What will you do:
Design and develop electrical systems and architectures from boards to system level spanning a broad range of disciplines, i.e.., digital, analog, power, packaging/thermal.
Prototype design solutions/concepts to prove design feasibility, functionality, and performance.
Collaborate with engineers in mechanical, firmware, software, test, and other fields to build innovative solutions and ensure requirements and specifications are met.
Participate in design reviews and FMEA analysis.
Document engineering designs and implementations.
May contribute to the generation of IP.
Contributes to the development of product specifications based on the MRDs.
Select the appropriate metrics to evaluate the performance of a complex technical approach/solution to a problem that can be multidisciplinary.
Work independently and reach out to management when direction is needed.
Manages multidisciplinary projects and provides guidance to other engineers.
Recognizes situations in which the different processes should be used and understands interactions between the systems.
Generate test data to support Engineering Change Notices and release of new and upgraded products.
Perform testing and troubleshooting at the component, board, and system level.
Clearly document and present the results of the designs and investigations.
Networks with personnel of other departments including Marketing.
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

How will you get here?
Electrical, Physics Bachelor degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or a M.S. degree and a minimum of 6 years related experience, or a Ph.D. with a minimum of 3 years related experience. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Experience developing instrumentation for biotechnology applications.
Experience with product development life cycle processes.
Experience/knowledge in the following areas:
Motion control experience
Microfluidics control
Analog-to-digital Circuit design
Proficiency in OrCAD, and/or equivalent PCB schematic and layout tools is required.
Proven experience designing and developing complex electrical systems from feasibility through to production, from board to system level.
Strong communication & presentation skills with internal and external partners and engineering leaders.

You are amazing if you have:
Understanding of spectral analysis of signals and tools such as lock-in amplifier.
Experience working in a regulated environment.
Knowledge of optics, camera systems and illumination.
Knowledge of serial bus interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART.
Demonstrated experience with troubleshooting of sophisticated systems to include circuit issues, EMI/EMC/ESD mitigation.
A working understanding of Hardware design using DFMA IPC design guidelines.
Experience Embedded firmware design experience.
Understanding of microfluidics impedance cytometry.

The US base salary range for this full-time position, expected to be located in San Jose, CA, is $160k - $170k USD. This range may be modified at any time at our sole discretion.
