Job Description
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Genome Technology Core (GTC) Director will drive the creation and deployment of innovative genomic approaches to address diverse questions in biomedical research. The Director will oversee the operation and strategic development of the core, ensuring the delivery of high-quality genomic services and support to Whitehead Institute researchers, and the greater academic and biotech community. They will collaborate with and advise scientists at Whitehead and the broader community on the effective application of innovative methods in genomics to advance their research. Billing, accounting, and other administrative responsibilities will receive the support of the Administrative Lab Manager for Core Facilities. All duties will be performed in accordance with Whitehead Institute’s policies, mission, values, and vision.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
Leadership and Management:
• Provide visionary leadership for the GTC, aligning with the institute’s mission, scientific, and strategic goals.
• Supervise and mentor GTC staff, encouraging skill and technology development, and promoting a collaborative and productive work environment.
• Manage the core’s budget, including planning, forecasting, and financial oversight.
Operational Oversight:
• Coordinates with staff to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the core facility, maintaining high standards of service quality, and reliability.
• Provides oversight and mentorship to the team for the development, validation, and implementation of new genomic technologies and methodologies.
• Ensures compliance with regulatory and safety standards and the maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Coordinates ordering, billing, and other administrative tasks with the Administrative Lab Manager for Core Facilities.
Scientific and Technical Expertise:
• Provide expert guidance on genomic technologies and applications to support diverse research projects.
• Stay abreast of advancements in genomic technologies and implement relevant innovations to enhance core capabilities.
• Collaborate with researchers to design, execute, and interpret genomic experiments.
Strategic Planning and Development:
• Develop and execute a strategic plan for the core facility, identifying opportunities for growth and improvement.
• Promote the core’s capabilities through presentations, publications, and participation in scientific conferences.
• Interact with other core facilities at Whitehead and neighboring Institutes and Universities to build connections and innovate.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement:
• Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and collaborators, ensuring their needs are met and exceeded.
• Provide training and educational resources to researchers on the use of genomic technologies.
• Interact with vendors and engineers, and manage service calls and repairs as necessary.
Other duties as advised by the faculty oversight or Whitehead administration.
Requirements
• Ph.D. in genomics, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field.
• 5–7 years of experience working in a biomedical research laboratory preferred.
• Proven leadership and management skills with experience supervising scientific teams.
• Extensive knowledge & expertise in genomic technologies, including next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, and the ability to integrate new and existing technologies as appropriate.
• Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate sophisticated technical information to a non-technical audience.
• Strong organizational and project management skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
