Job Description

Senior Research Associate I–Pre-Pivotal Biologics Development – Foster City, CA

Gilead has an opportunity for an industry experienced level scientist in the Cell Line Development (CLD) group at our Foster City campus facility. We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented individual to design and execute experiments to support cell culture and clone development for our rapidly growing biologics pipeline. The successful candidate will also contribute to the overall strategy of new technology development projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in end-to-end Cell Line Development pipeline projects, including activities from vector design and construction to clonal cell lines ready for Master Cell Bank generation
  • Support CLD activities including clone selection, technology development, media development, process optimization, and process characterization studies.
  • Support process improvements for increased speed and efficiency to generate highly productive, high quality, robust cell lines that meet all regulatory requirements with high quality documentation.
  • Hands-on laboratory operations such as molecular biology, shake flask, bench scale bioreactor and novel culture platforms.
  • Contribute to written technical reports, present in group meetings, and work cross-functionally to achieve common goals.

Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

  • B.S with 2+ years OR M.S. with 0+ years of experience in a relevant scientific discipline (biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, biochemical engineering).
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture (CHO) and automation/high-throughput technologies for mammalian cell line generation and process optimization preferred
  • Excellent communication, technical report writing, and presentation skills and aptitude for creative problem solving.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Experience in statistics and data analysis (e.g. JMP, Spotfire


The salary range for this position is: $92,820.00 - $120,120.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
