The Director , Publications will lead the establishment of a Strategic Publication Plan in alignment with Global Medical Plans, medical/scientific communication strategy and objectives. In addition, the Global Publications Director will ensure that specific asset Strategic Publication Plans are aligned and connected with the broader above asset level scientific and medical communication strategy (Above asset level = portfolio) / Therapy areas / disease areas / businesses etc.)

To achieve this, the Global Publications Director will lead matrix teams to develop long-term strategic publication plans and ensure alignment of global plans with regional/country needs.

The Global Publications Director is also responsible for ensuring advanced execution of plans, in a timely manner according to plan prioritization, available resources and following GSK policies, good publication practices and highest standards quality. The post-holder will be involved in the editorial review of key priority publications, oversee the quality of document tracking in the publications management system, and assist with reporting and monitoring processes.

The Global Publications Director may work in collaboration with a Publications Associate Director who oversees a specific asset or book of work.

Key attributes for this role include a focus on scientific integrity and ethics, demonstrated ability to input and influence projects through publication and operational expertise, and demonstrated excellence in stakeholder management. This role requires strategic thinking, solution-finding, and agility as evidenced by flexibility, adaptability to change, and ability to lead and drive change.

The post-holder will be viewed as a publication professional with great understanding of GPP and ICMJE to foster compliant development of accurate and timely publications. The Medical Governance framework for scientific exchange is complex and the risk of damage to the company reputation is high if good practices are not respected. The role holder will need to make judgment calls to apply policy and practice recommendations to complex situations involving multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for leading a cross-functional publication team to develop strategic publications plans and detailed tactics to execute those plans. Work closely with medical function to incorporate the strategic publication plan into the medical strategic framework.
  • Ensure global and regional/country alignment and input on plans in collaboration with Regional Publications team.
  • Strong scientific knowledge for the asset they are managing showing strong competence of the content of a pub and why it is in the plan.
  • Make cross-references and alignment above asset level publications strategy and implement into individual asset strategic publication plans.
  • Communicate effectively about the plan to different audiences including senior management.
  • Oversee effective execution of publication plans within a rigorous framework that operates according to established best practices.
  • Manage external agencies in production of these and other deliverables when appropriate and necessary.
  • Strong and continual focus on scientific integrity and ethics and comfortable challenging any digression from company policy or values.
  • Manage all financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects, including vendor relationships.
  • Establish strong working relationships with key stakeholders internally (product teams, LOCs) and externally.
  • Serve as the point of contact and publications expert for internal stakeholders and external stakeholders (e.g., consultants, advisors, external experts, journals, and professional societies).
  • Be the spokesperson for all aspects related to the publications within a given disease areas/group of assets.
  • Manage a complex network of stakeholders and ensure proactive communication putting the Strategic Publication plans in context for the specific needs of the functions/seniority levels.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives in line with achieving overall team objectives.
  • Recognizes emerging compliance risks and proactively contributes to risk mitigation plans.
  • efforts to establish and strategically deliver enterprise best practice.
  • Coach / mentor and train the Associate Director as per needs arise.

Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, pharmacy or other allied health field, medical communications, or related subject.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry with experience in publications management, scientific communications and/or medical affairs with an external scientific engagement focus
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in strategic publication planning in pharmaceutical environment.
  • Experience in leading and managing a multifunctional matrix team.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously to influence and lead teams.
  • Prioritizes workload and makes an accurate determination of timeframe for project completion.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • PhD or medical degree in science, pharmacy, or other allied health field (or experience that can be considered as equivalent to PhD Proven, demonstrated and significant, experience as Publications Professional..
  • Knowledge of GSK processes and Scientific Engagement principles and operating practices.
  • Familiarity of or experience with Datavision/iEnvision Publication software.

  • Proven experience in leading a high performing matrix team – setting standards for and managing publication team performance against these standards.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously to influence and lead teams.
  • Ability to manage a lot of different priorities and to address complex situations based on strong experience and ability to make 360 assessments across boundaries.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and targeted way to different audiences including senior management.
  • Ability to independently Managing highly charged political situations or sensitivity i.e. alliance partnerships / pubs steering committees.
  • Main point of contact and communicate on region/asset portfolio to associated relevant senior leadership, including presentations of KPIs and publication initiatives to increase the visibility of publication department.
  • Ability to critically analyze and interpret data.
  • Effectively communicates with team members and stakeholders regarding the planning and development of all sci comm deliverables, including the management of agency partners and the associated budgets.
