The Modality Platform Technologies (MPT) group specializes in the design, synthesis, and deployment of novel modalities, including oligonucleotides, targeted protein degraders, and antibody drug conjugates to accelerate drug discovery. The team brings together medicinal chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and automation expertise to deliver industry leading platforms, uniting science, technology, and talent to get ahead of disease together.

As a Director in the MPT group, the successful candidate will be responsible for helping to drive the creation and execution of our strategic objectives, and to manage a team of US-based scientists, including their personal development. You must be able to think strategically, have outstanding creativity, demonstrate a track record of success, and be able to work collaboratively. Moreover, this role requires a drive for continuous self-improvement and active contribution to a fantastic work culture that enables everyone to succeed together.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and motivate multiple teams with vision, integrity, flexibility, and clear communication.
  • Proactively identify, evaluate, and enable novel platform modality technologies that will accelerate the delivery of GSK’s medicines portfolio.
  • Lead teams of scientists in the development of novel approaches for the design and synthesis of cutting-edge modalities, with a focus on oligonucleotides.
  • Serve as an accountable decision maker in the MPT leadership team, driving strategic direction and interfacing with business partners across research to advance the platforms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to apply our innovative modalities platforms to the discovery of new therapeutics.
  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in chemistry and technologies aligned to the group remit and evaluate their potential applications for the discovery of therapeutics.

Why you?

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry) with a focus on organic synthesis, combined with significant leadership experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry.
  • 10+ Years of Industry experience.
  • Strong strategic foresight, and the demonstrated ability to formulate and implement plans to achieve business level goals.
  • Previous direct line leadership experience, and expertise in motivating and driving a high level of performance from individuals and teams.
  • Multiple previous experiences of matrix leadership of scientific projects or initiatives, with examples of successfully developing team members.
  • People and cultural skills as evidenced by successful collaborations with multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Expertise with various synthesis platforms and instrumentation commonly used in modern medicinal chemistry.
  • Practical experience in the design, preparation, purification and analysis of oligonucleotides.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills enabling efficient presentation of scientific findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Record of high-impact publication in peer reviewed journals.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
