We are currently looking for a highly motivated Organic Chemist to join our Medicinal Chemistry team in suburban Philadelphia. The Discovery Chemistry group partners with teams across GSK’s research units to deliver high quality small molecules/novel modalities, from hit generation through late-stage lead optimization. The purpose of this role is to provide scientific leadership to teams within the Discovery Chemistry Department and/or multidisciplinary teams across GSK’s R&D organization as well as partner with our Molecular Modality Capability group to embed new capabilities within Discovery Chemistry.

The successful candidate will work with business partners to build strategic project plans to support GSK’s small molecule portfolio and deliver medical chemistry objectives from those plans. This person will also be accountable for identifying appropriate opportunities within the discovery chemistry portfolio to apply capabilities such as high throughput experimentation, direct to biology arrays, and high throughput chemistry and work across lines to effectively resource these opportunities. You must be able to think strategically and flexibly, be driven by the needs of the organization, and be able to work collaboratively. Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain a laboratory presence.

  • Lead matrix team of high throughput chemistry/direct-to-biology/high throughput experimentation experts within discovery chemistry to partner with Molecular Modality Capabilities to deploy the latest advancements in chemistry and new technologies best equipped to address scientific hypotheses.

  • Work with matrix teams to define strategic project plans, identifying key inflection points for discovery chemistry.

  • Scientific leadership of projects within the discovery chemistry portfolio.

  • Lead and motivate teams with vision, integrity, flexibility, and clear communication.

  • Contribute to peer review of programs within the Discovery Chemistry portfolio.

  • Serve as a coach and/or mentor within Discovery Chemistry.

  • Lead teams of scientists in the development of novel approaches for the design and synthesis of cutting-edge modalities, for example: degraders, oligonucleotides, and antibody-drug conjugates.

Why you?

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry or biochemistry) with a demonstrated expertise in synthetic methods.

  • 1 + year experience implementing high throughput chemistry, direct to biology, and/or high throughput experimentation.

  • 3 + years of demonstrated ability to formulate and implement strategy to achieve scientific or organizational goals.

  • 3 + years of previous leadership experience that can be evidenced with motivating and driving a high level of performance from individuals and teams.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Effective people and cultural skills as evidenced by successful collaborations with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills enabling efficient presentation of scientific findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Industrial or biotechnology experience of at least 7 years.

  • Expertise with various synthesis platforms and instrumentation commonly used in modern medicinal chemistry.

  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in problem-solving.

  • Multiple previous experiences of leadership of scientific projects or initiatives, with examples of developing team members.

  • Demonstration of strategic oversight of business-related programs, projects, or platforms.

  • Practical experience in the design, preparation, purification and analysis of oligonucleotides, antibody drug conjugates, or targeted protein degraders.

  • Record of high-impact publication in peer reviewed journals.

  • Record of scientific oral communication with internal and/or external visibility.
