Laboratory Assistant 2, Onsite in Great Abington

As a Laboratory Assistant 2 at Illumina in the Core R&D Ops & Portfolio Management organization you will work in a dynamic, fast paced, team-oriented environment and support scientists in the Core R&D function create genomic analysis tools that enable leading-edge research and development. The role is lab based, you would be responsible for the upkeep of the labs, place orders for stock, buffer preparation and providing support to the Lab Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain laboratory products and consumables, raising requisitions for replenishment where necessary and assist the team in maintaining core consumables by liaising with Supply Chain team. This will include PPE supply for the different labs.
  • Assist the Lab Management Team in the following.
    • Schedule preparation of routine laboratory buffers and solutions. Order and maintain stock required for buffer preparation.
    • Perform lab walkthroughs and report on lab consumable needs. In doing so, the role holder will take a pro-active approach to supporting the lab users by investigating equipment faults and other lab related issues.
    • Maintaining chemical inventory and ensuring all materials are stored in accordance to documented temperature requirements and in correct inventory locations.
    • Participate in 6S Kaizen events and support the lab teams in their 6S activities/requests
    • Auditing and organising storage locations for equipment and lab materials
    • Ensuring laboratory waste streams are correctly managed prior to collection and disposal.
    • Supporting the maintenance of regulated lab accreditation and assisting the Laboratory Supervisor/Specialist with regulator audits and quality investigations
    • Keeping laboratory cleanliness and housekeeping in all areas under Illumina control to a high standard.
    • Equipment relocation and calibration.
    • Routine preventative maintenance of basic laboratory equipment.
    • Liaising with the wider Lab Management team, other internal Illumina departments and external visitors/contractors.
  • Provide ad-hoc support to laboratory staff.
  • Participate in scheduled inventory cycle counts.
  • Signage management

Preferred Requirements:

  • A highly organised person with an eye for detail who upholds safety and regulatory compliance within the laboratory.
  • An ability to manage multiple parallel activities and track progress in a way which can be easily reported back to the manager and laboratory staff.
  • Ability to take on more challenging routine tasks which involve chemical or biochemical procedures.
  • A-Levels, or equivalent, in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. (BSc in a scientific discipline would be desirable but not essential)
  • Experience in chemical use and handling would be desirable but not essential.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform all essential functions using safe work methods and following safety regulations relating to job.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory and clerical procedures; ability to operate laboratory and office equipment; ability to accurately perform math calculations, solution preparations and troubleshoot when needed.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form.
  • Ability to interpret policy and establish methods and procedures is preferred.
