Here is your chance to participate in development of Illumina’s award-winning DNA sequencing instruments. You will be part of a highly competent Mechanical Engineering team that that believes in continuous innovation, trust, and balance. The engineer will be participating in cross-functional teams and responsible for developing strategies, performing analysis, and innovating new technologies.

Job duties:

  • Perform mechanical and thermal design, analysis and testing at an instrument and subsystem level.
  • Perform extensive thermal analysis and testing in order to determine design tradeoffs.
  • Validate and optimize thermal models utilizing testing and data analysis.
  • Utilize a variety of manufacturing processes to develop the best instrument and subsystem designs.
  • Perform instrument and subsystem design applying DFMA and DFS.
  • Perform risk analysis, develop test plans, and execute verification testing of subsystems and systems.
  • Propose and investigate new technologies and products that enable the goals of Illumina’s product portfolio.
  • Convert product requirements into instrument and subsystem specifications.
  • Work in cross-functional teams, made up of technical and non-technical individuals.
  • Work with vendors to evaluate and source components and equipment.
  • Utilize data to perform cost of design and performance options.
  • Transfer new products into manufacturing, track issues in manufacturing and the field, determine root cause and drive resolution of issues.
  • Thrive in a dynamic environment and which emphasizes meeting milestones and breaking down barriers to achieve innovative results.

Education and Experience:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Preferred that candidate have experience in product development, transfer to manufacturing and documentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles and practices - Form, fit, tolerance stack analysis, GD&T, drafting standards, FEA, design for assembly, design for manufacturing, etc.
  • Evaluation and optimization of complex tolerance budgets.
  • Experience designing complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Selection of electromechanical components such as fans, TEC's and sensors.
  • Candidate must have strong communication skills and interpersonal, relationship-building skills.
  • Fluent in SolidWorks CAD software or similar CAD software.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with thermal design, analysis and testing.
  • Experience with Thermal Electric Coolers, Cold plates, Heat sinks, Fans highly desired.
  • Experience in fluid analysis including FEA is a plus.
  • Experience with injection molding, thermal forming and RIM highly desired.
  • Experience in FDA regulated markets is a plus.

The estimated base salary range for the Engineer 2 - Chassis and Thermal Design role based in the United States of America is: $73,400 - $110,200. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
