Position Summary

As a Staff Systems Integration Engineer at Illumina you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment and help create and test genomic analysis tools used in the leading edge of research. You will participate in the development of high quality, robust products through the integration of hardware, software and chemistry components. You will also lead the design and execution of test plans to optimize systems/product performance.

Responsibilities

  • Represent Systems Integration function on project teams. Collaborate with all functions within project teams (such as assay development, software, engineering and manufacturing) and with external development partners. Engage in the early design of products to represent Systems Integration knowledge.
  • Act as subject matter expert on systems from early development including breadboards and prototypes through product launch. Contribute to definition of product requirements for hardware, software, and consumables. Plan, execute, and direct integration experiments. Present study results and technical risks and recommendations to Senior Management.
  • Coordinate product development activities, especially experimental work and troubleshooting efforts, on project teams within the Systems Integration function.
  • Lead design and execution of verification and validation studies with appropriately defined and rigorously documented system configurations.
  • Contribute to setting specifications to achieve system performance that is robust and reproducible and meets product requirements.
  • Set up data management infrastructure for projects. Select appropriate statistical methods and use analysis software to interpret large and complex data sets.
  • Aggregate workflow experiences, issue reports, internal testing, and field data to guide the development of industry leading user experiences for Illumina products.
  • Deliver written documents and oral presentations of plans and results that are well organized, appropriately detailed, clearly worded, and nicely formatted.
  • Cultivate a collaborative working environment that encourages openness to new ideas and perspectives.
  • Serve as a role model and technical mentor for junior team members.
  • Contribute to organizational initiatives outside of product development projects.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience integrating assays and workflows onto automated liquid handling platforms (generic liquid handlers and/or purpose-built systems).
  • Proficiency in programming automated liquid handlers using software such as Hamilton Venus or Beckman Biomek.
  • Basic proficiency in general scripting and programming in a language like Python is preferred.
  • Familiarity with sample extraction processes, library prep for next generation sequencing, and Illumina sequencing systems.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate risks related to automation and at project level.
  • Knowledge of design controls and experience working in regulatory environments is a plus (e.g. CLIA, ISO 13485, GMP/GLP, IVD).
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and successfully work across multiple disciplines such as assay development, engineering, software and manufacturing.
  • A broad scientific knowledge (instrumentation, chemistry, molecular biology, software, etc.).
  • Multidisciplinary approach to problem solving. Proven ability to lead investigation and resolution of automation problems.
  • Proven skills in analysis of large complex data sets.
  • Must be detail oriented and highly motivated.
  • A desire to be a part of a fast paced, multidisciplinary and dynamic environment.
  • Eagerness to engage in hands-on laboratory work.
  • Proven ability to lead others to accomplish technical tasks beyond the capability of a single person.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills required.

Experience/Education

  • Typically requires a PhD degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (such as Bioengineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular biology or related field) and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (such as Bioengineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular biology or related field) and a minimum of 8 years of related experience

The estimated base salary range for the Staff Systems Integration Engineer role based in the United States of America is: $115,800 - $173,800. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
