The Role

Moderna continues to leverage its novel mRNA platform to expand the R&D portfolio and open new therapeutic applications for mRNA across diseases and therapeutic areas. Over the past few years, we have demonstrated clinical success in multiple mRNA applications including infectious disease vaccines, individualized neoantigen therapy, and intracellular rare metabolic therapies. We now have multiple licensed products with an exciting late-stage pipeline.

The Senior Director, Commercial Strategy will be responsible for shaping and executing strategies that optimize resource allocation, drive portfolio investment decisions, and align commercial activities with corporate priorities. Working closely with commercial and cross-functional teams, this individual will develop a deep understanding of market dynamics and organizational needs to partner on the development of innovative strategies.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Develop and implement frameworks for commercial portfolio prioritization, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy, market opportunities, and investment requirements
  • Integrate market value pools with internal commercial activities to prioritize resources and maximize the value of the commercial portfolio, shaping an integrated portfolio strategy that balances value, risk, and return
  • Develop a deep understanding of value pools and market dynamics, including customer, consumer, and competitive trends, to identify and size market opportunities
  • Evaluate commercial activities to identify high-value opportunities, balancing investment requirements and anticipated returns to inform resource allocation
  • Lead the development of geographic and channel strategies, working closely with the commercial organization to define strategic choices, tactics, and activities, along with associated investments, to drive impact in key market value pools
  • Lead cross-functional decision-making by providing data-driven insights, actionable scenario planning, and clear communication of strategic trade-offs and recommendations
  • Design and refine frameworks and processes to enable continuous performance monitoring and adaptation in response to emerging data and insights
  • Serve as a critical integration point across research, development, manufacturing, and commercial teams, ensuring alignment and seamless execution of strategy throughout the mRNA pipeline

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 12+ years of experience in strategy or commercial operations, preferable in a clinical- or commercial-stage pharmaceutical/biotech company
  • Advanced degree, such as an MBA, MPH, or PhD in Life Sciences or a related field,, with an understanding of drug development and value creation in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated success in leading ad-hoc commercial strategy projects with measurable impact on portfolio optimization or market success
  • Proven ability to develop processes for prioritizing commercial portfolio investments and driving strategy alignment across diverse stakeholders

  • Ability to perform and synthesize in-depth commercial analyses of market opportunities, resource allocation, and portfolio priorities, integrating insights on competitive landscapes, market dynamics, and organizational objectives to develop strategic recommendations and defend them with data-driven rationale
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills to deliver a compelling narrative/message to senior stakeholders in the organization
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams (e.g., R&D, CMC, Commercial) to ensure strategic alignment and seamless execution of priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to drive impactful, data-informed decisions in a high-growth, fast-paced environment while embodying Boldness, Relentlessness, Curiosity, and Collaboration.
  • Ability to design scalable processes for commercial portfolio prioritization and strategy execution.
  • This role is based in our new LEED-certified HQ in Cambridge, MA and is expected to be in office 70% of the time with flexibility to work from home up to 30%.
