Job Overview:

NAL is seeking a highly competent and experienced Project Manager to lead the coordination and strategic planning of the entire project portfolio of the scientific team. This role involves overseeing all scientific projects at NAL, requiring a seasoned professional with extensive experience in managing complex, multi-disciplinary projects. The Project Manager will be instrumental in implementing the scientific vision of the organization by aligning annual, quarterly, and monthly goals across various projects with broader business objectives and ensuring their successful execution. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading and delivering high-impact projects in a scientific research or biotech context.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the full lifecycle of scientific projects, from scope definition to resource allocation, implementation, and review, ensuring that all projects meet their timelines and deliverables.
  • Implement rigorous project tracking mechanisms, including sprints and KPIs, to monitor progress against the scientific goals of the organization and adjust strategies as necessary.
  • Serve as a liaison between the science and engineering teams, ensuring seamless integration and coherence in project execution across disciplines.
  • Conduct regular project reviews and prepare detailed reports and updates for the Chief Scientist and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of grant and project applications, ensuring scientific rigor and alignment with funding objectives.
  • Organize and lead regular project meetings, ensuring clear communication of expectations, progress, and issues.
  • Foster a disciplined approach to project management within the science team, enhancing productivity and ensuring compliance with internal standards and external regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Degree in Project Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in a scientific discipline, ideally in marine science, ecology, bioinformatics, or ocean conservation.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in project management, ideally within a scientific research or biotech context.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Proficiency in Agile methodologies and modern project management practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in data management tools and project management software (e.g., Asana).
  • Excellent leadership skills with a proven track record in team performance evaluations and strategic planning.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders across different time zones.
  • Experience in conducting regular project reviews and preparing detailed reports for senior stakeholders.
  • Experience in preparing and submitting grant and project applications, ensuring scientific rigor and alignment with funding objectives.
  • Fluency in English and ideally Spanish.

Preferred:

  • PhD in a relevant field, enhancing the depth of understanding of scientific projects and research methodologies.
  • Seven years experience in project management, ideally within a scientific research or biotech context.
  • Certification in Project Management, such as PMP (Project Management Professional) or PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments).
  • Experience working in marine protected areas and with governmental or international conservation entities.
  • Hands-on experience in marine science or a related field, with a good understanding of ecological research, bioinformatics, computational biology or ocean conservation.
  • Coding skills to facilitate better understanding and integration with engineering teams.

Location:

Los Angeles. This position offers a blend of remote work and in-person collaboration so the candidate must be based in the Los Angeles Area. .
