About the department
Novo Nordisk Japan's Legal, Ethics & Compliance Division ensures the organization complies with legal and regulatory requirements. Our activities include providing legal counsel/support in areas related to the business, ensuring ethical conduct, and maintaining compliance with relevant regulations, laws, and standards. We are a dynamic and collaborative team based in Japan, dedicated to protecting and leveraging the organization’s key assets and interests. The role will report directly to VP of Legal, Ethics & Compliance.
The position
As an Ethics and Compliance Director at Novo Nordisk, you will:
- Design, implement, and optimize the Business Ethics (BE) compliance program in alignment with Novo Nordisk’s global framework and local regulations. The program includes infrastructure and fostering a compliance culture. It addresses risks related to FCPA, anti-bribery laws, and rules on interactions with Healthcare Professionals (HCPs), Healthcare Institutions (HCIs), patients, and product promotion. Involves project management and coordination with senior management in Japan and globally.
- Help the business leaders take intelligent risks through clear-cut BE compliance risk analysis and help them drive growth initiatives. Oversee all Line of Business (LoB) and provide various compliance support including consultation, reviewing communication material, training, and solving complex problems either directly or together with the team.
- Represent Region Japan in Novo Nordisk’s Global Compliance Forum (GCF) to influence GCF decision making, ensure alignment, and seek timely support for Region Japan. Also share best practices, learn from each other, and contribute globally.
- Manage compliance team including organization development and attract, retain, and develop talents in the team. Proactively assist the Head of Legal, Ethics & Compliance to manage the department including establishing strategies and priorities at department level.
- Lead compliance investigations, collaborate with People & Organization (P&O) on disciplinary committee matters, serve as the Data Privacy Representative for Region Japan, represent the company in industry associations such as Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA) or European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) as appropriate, and handle all other tasks related to or ancillary to the above.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in law is required; legal qualification (Japan, US/UK/Australia, or a similar jurisdiction) is preferred.
- A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in compliance, within a company, firm, or regulatory authority, is required; experience in healthcare industry compliance and people management is strongly preferred.
- A legal mindset with logical thinking, a rule-based approach, and strong skills in interpretation and application.
- Proficient in clear and logical communication (both written and verbal), with executive communication skills and the ability to manage multi-stakeholder relationships.
- Strong expertise in designing, implementing, and optimizing compliance infrastructure, including rule-setting, tool development, training and communication, pre-approval and post-monitoring processes, reporting, investigations, corrective/preventive actions, and IT utilization.
- Project management expertise, with a passion for integrity, compliance culture, learning, personal development, and fluency in both Japanese and English.
