PerkinElmer, a global leader in technology, is searching for an experienced hardware research and development scientist to help drive innovative solutions in our Mass Spectrometry (MS) R&D team. This individual will become a key member of a group of senior PerkinElmer researchers and liaise closely with other scientists at PerkinElmer’s partners and collaborators. This position reports into PerkinElmer’s Global R&D organization.

This position emphasizes “hands on” physical instrument research and development activities including: design, construction, optimization, and troubleshooting of prototype mass spectrometry equipment; sourcing and exploration of specialized components; physical modifications to instrument subsystems; interfacing, optimization, and operation of chromatography equipment and autosamplers. Works closely with engineers and technologists to complete experiments in short turn-around times. Provides concise progress reports in a timely manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Initiate and execute scientific research experimentation with an emphasis on developing next generation MS hardware technology, trade secret, and intellectual property.
  • Act as a mass spectrometry scientific expert within the R&D team, enabling thorough conceptualization and overall design and testing of new products.
  • Influence the scientific community and market via patents, publications, and conference presentations.
  • Provide research project planning, cost and time estimates.
  • Work with manufacturing, sustaining, and service personnel to improve quality, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability of products.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, or Engineering, with strong hands-on laboratory skills.
  • Knowledge of mass spectrometry theory and hardware, with prior practical experience is essential (such as electromagnetic fields, ionization sources, quadrupole mass analyzers, RF systems, vacuum systems, charged particle detectors and data acquisition hardware).


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in the design and development of critical subsystem components for MS.
  • Strong instrumentation design / construction skills and troubleshooting ability.
  • Relevant industrial instrumentation or application experience is strongly preferred.
  • Programming skills in one or more industry standard computer languages or firmware.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks with different priorities.
  • Previous successful academic or work-related experience mentoring peers.
  • Previous relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals.
