Want to be part of a team that’s making a difference to human health?

Responsibilities:

The role

We need high-calibre engineers who can combine scientific understanding, creativity, engineering design and project leadership skills to develop the next generation of advanced laboratory instruments.

Product development extends from initial concept through to introduction into Manufacturing and the early stages of product support.

What you will be doing

You will be responsible for helping to define product requirements, through close contact and collaboration with our customers and product managers, and for the early prototyping work necessary for de-risking the technology. As the design progresses you will be expected to develop working prototypes for placements with customers and gather user feedback for iterating the design, along with input from in-house manufacturing engineers. Once the product is developed, tested and proven you will be responsible for ensuring that the design data and know-how is transferred through to the manufacturing and service teams to enable serial production and product support. Throughout, you will be working as a member of a multidisciplinary team, with increasing project leadership responsibilities.

Essential Requirements

  • Educational Background: A master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mechatronic Engineering or a related discipline (e.g., Control Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering) from a leading university. The candidate must demonstrate a solid foundation in materials, mathematics, mechanics, structures, fluid mechanics, pneumatic systems, and electrical/electronic engineering.
  • Industry Experience: Relevant experience leading projects involving the design and development of mechatronic systems, preferably in the life sciences sector. Expertise in liquid handling, laboratory automation, or similar applications is highly desirable.
  • Programming Skills: A good level of proficiency in high-level programming languages such as C++, C#, or Python, with the ability to understand or write software as required is highly desirable. Close cooperation with the software engineering team will be a vital part of the role.
  • System-Level Expertise: A broad understanding of systems engineering, with the capability to coordinate and integrate mechanical, software, and electronic engineering disciplines.
  • Problem-Solving Ability: Strong technical problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.
  • Product Development Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of the product development process, including New Product Development (NPD) and New Product Introduction (NPI). Experience working within multi-disciplinary project teams is essential.
  • CAD Proficiency: Experienced in using SolidWorks (or similar CAD software) for mechanical design and development.
  • Practical Skills: Demonstrated practical mechanical engineering abilities, including hands-on skills in developing prototypes and concepts.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with full proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience with rapid prototyping and iterative design processes.
  • Basic workshop proficiency, including familiarity with tools and equipment used in mechanical assembly or testing.
  • Basic practical electronics skills, testing, soldering etc.
  • Mechanical refrigeration systems -20°C to -80°C.
  • Plastic injection moulding.
