Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder welcomes application for the Program Manager for Advisor Training, Development, and Community Building! This is an essential consultant to the advising leadership team in the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) and is devoted to supporting the broader advising and coaching community across campus. The Program Manager is actively involved in the development, planning, and administration of a campus-wide vision for advising excellence through implementation of academic advising practices and scholarship that are consistent with campus student success priorities. The incumbent serves as a subject matter expert in developmental and appreciative advising and is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing training and professional development programs, and reporting on key outcomes. In order to maintain current advising expertise and develop effective resources for advising at CU Boulder, a portion of the Program Manager role is devoted to direct student support.

The Program Manager collaborates with and reports to the Director of Campus Advising Initiatives and Strategy and serves as a resource and partner to advising leaders across campus. Critical responsibilities include managing logistics for the CU Boulder Student Success Conference; supporting the Advising Perspectives Program and OUE Leadership Institute; and programming and executing a professional development training series. The incumbent leads training and professional development communities of practice and also supports local, regional and national advising professional organizations, in partnership with those groups. The core of these programs support the strategic alignment of campus wide advising through a shared leadership structure while also recognizing and balancing the unique needs and characteristics of individual CU Boulder academic advising units. Within this context, the incumbent will manage a broad range of administrative support activities, including creation and maintenance of Canvas courses, management of a SharePoint site, and management of advising certifications of completion and credentials of ongoing learning and demonstration of exceptional professionalism.

Training

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Develop and facilitate formal onboarding and training programs that provide seamless integration for all newly hired academic advisors and academic coaches on campus.
  • Create a welcoming space for new members of the advising community.
  • Develop and maintain current/up-to-date training content using the Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Identify and track learning outcomes, in close collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship and support by working closely with all newly hired advisors to assist their transition to the university.
  • Serve as an ongoing expert and resource.
  • Collaborate with the network of point people in each advising program for onboarding and training; assist them in managing their own complementary “next step” content that is specific to their unit; and provide assistance to each advising program in building unit-specific tools and resources.
  • Supervise seasonal project coordinators as needed.
  • Develop and maintain a common repository of advisor resources using SharePoint and Canvas.

Professional Development

  • Develop and/or facilitate meaningful campus-wide professional development programs that enhance the practice and skills of current advisors and student support staff and promote leadership development, staff engagement, team collaboration, and change management.
  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive training and development framework that promotes inclusivity, diversity, and equity practices for advisors and coaches.
  • Partner with internal and external experts to deliver engaging and impactful sessions.
  • Develop a feedback loop for community engagement on current topics.
  • Manage and grow the ongoing WorkWell programming that supports health and wellness of our community.
  • Actively co-host and manage logistics for the annual Conference on Student Success.

Assessment, Technology & Reporting

  • Maintain records of participation and monitor progress in professional development activities and track outcomes to measure the effectiveness of programs.
  • Consult with advising units on the Canvas training and development course, providing feedback to supervisors and working with participants as needed to help them progress through the course.
  • Manage certificates of completion and develop and maintain other credentials (e.g., digital badges, microcredentials).
  • Develop and maintain subject matter expertise to serve as a resource on key technologies, including Campus Solutions, Degree Audit, Salesforce, Canvas, and SharePoint.

Community-Wide Community Building & Leadership

  • Foster positive working relationships with campus wide advising community members by establishing Ralphie’s Advising Help Lab (RAHL) as a support and resource for the advising community.
  • Lead or participate in campus-wide communities of practice, including supporting campus-wide DEI and antiracism training and development practices.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with staff throughout the advising community by visiting staff meetings, making the rounds to advisor offices, and hosting community-building events.
  • Serve as a resource to the advising community by consistently being aware of and up-to-date on trends in higher education, professional development and training strategies, CU Boulder policies and procedures related to advising, and content and skills applicable to advising staff.
  • Partner with the Director of Campus Advising Initiatives and Strategy to maintain and champion the academic journal Palimpsest: Innovative Works, Transformative Experiences, and Evolving Practices in Student Success and Academic Advising.
  • Work closely with the associate vice provost and other leadership members on the OUE advising team on various initiatives and strategic planning to improve the sense of belonging and elevate the profession of academic advising on the CU Boulder campus.

Student Support And Advising

  • Maintain a physical presence in Ralphie’s Advising Help Lab.
  • Work with current and newly admitted students across all colleges, schools, and programs, providing holistic advising, support and encouragement along their journey of college student development.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with key student support offices so as to provide holistic connections to campus wide resources that support student success.
  • Practice a generalist approach to supporting all undergraduate students in their journey of exploration, discovery, and active participation in their undergraduate education.
  • The position requires extensive knowledge of advising and student development theory and practice, the lived experience of working with students from any discipline, and a historical expertise in the profession of advising. A necessary core value is understanding the generalist academic advising model and leading with advising excellence. Demonstrated success in the professional experience with these aspects of the role is required: training professional staff or classroom teaching or workshop facilitation; conference presentation; assessment of learning outcomes; expertise in instructional technology. Artifacts will be requested during the hiring process of this experience.
  • The dedicated workspace for this position is provided in Ralphie’s Advising Help Lab, an open community space for students and staff. The first 6 months in the role will require you to be fully in person on the CU Boulder campus, then a hybrid work modality is possible with up to one remote day each week most weeks. However, a fully in-person presence will be required during peak student registration periods. This position will interface with advisors, coaches, and advising supervisors and administrators, and will present and/or facilitate in small and large group learning spaces, mostly in-person and rarely in remote settings. An outgoing positive and enthusiastic human is essential to success.

What You Should Know

  • This role may be able to work remote one day per week after the 6-month in-person, on-campus training period. This is a residential student facing position.

What We Can Offer

  • Salary: $71,500 - $74,000.

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Five (5) years of related professional academic advising experience in higher education.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Expertise in the profession of advising, including knowledge of advising theory and practice and student development theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated skill in creating and maintaining a positive culture and environment through attitude and behavior.
  • Experience with assessment initiatives and reporting data.
  • Experience building and maintaining websites and web-based resources.
  • Experience building Canvas courses or using another Learning Management System.

Familiarity With CU Data Systems

Canvas, Camtasia; Microsoft Sharepoint, Salesforce, Google Suite, and scheduling software.
