Job Summary

The Center for Asian Studies is encouraging applications for The Executive Director of American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ)! The AATJ represents and serves more than 1,000 members who teach language at all levels of instruction and conduct research in Japanese language pedagogy, linguistics, literature, cultural studies, and others. The Executive Director is a spokesperson for the organization and the manager of its programs and communications. The national office of the organization is located in Boulder, Colorado, on the campus of the University of Colorado.

Who We Are

The Center for Asian Studies was established in 1999 to advance knowledge of Asia through undergraduate and graduate education, faculty research, and outreach programs for the broader community. The Center is committed to managing and expanding the interdisciplinary major in Asian Studies by providing student fellowships, scholarships, and study opportunities, investing in faculty research and professional development, providing support for building Asia-related resources on the CU Boulder campus, by developing academic exchanges with Asian-based colleagues and students, and by engaging the local community with Asia-related programs and events. The Center also serves to promote the University’s Flagship 2030 Initiative to ‘Build a Global Crossroads’ by internationalizing education on campus and promoting Asia in the context of global studies. Finally, the Center serves as a link and community-building resource for faculty and students across the University. CAS coordinates events, supports research and teaching, and acts as a key resource for students and scholars with an interest in Asian Studies. The Center's area of focus encompasses all of Asia, from China and Japan to the countries of the Middle East.

Responsibilities

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Governance-Related Items

  • Serving as Executive Director for a national professional organization with more than 1,000 individual and institutional members.
  • As appropriate, engaging legal and financial consultants to lead and review governing policies and practices.
  • Responsible for organizing documents, and keeping and archiving the organization's records over its 60-year history.
  • Hiring and supervising a staff of 2 to lead the programs listed below.
  • Perform and monitor administrative duties following the systems and procedures of the university and the bylaws of the American Association of Teachers of Japanese
  • Be responsible for the organization's IT infrastructure and ensure that technology resources are up-to-date, secure, and effectively supporting the organization's operations and programs.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for budgeting and handling the organization’s budget (an annual budget of between $300,00 and $500,000) ensuring that financial resources are allocated appropriately and that the organization is fiscally sound.
  • Responsible for governance and tax compliance of the organization, which is incorporated as a 501(C)3 not-for-profit organization under Internal Revenue Service regulations.
  • Serving as a key public spokesperson for the organization and the signer of contracts, tax returns, and other official documents.
  • Working with funders in government agencies and private foundations in both Japan and the United States to raise funds for projects that benefit teachers and learners of the Japanese language in the United States.

Communication

  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the elected Officers and Board of Directors, as well as for outreach and communication with members, including corresponding emails sent to the AATJ Office.
  • Responsible for making, leading, and supervising AATJ announcements through email, AATJ bulletin, and AATJ Website.

Supervision of Programs and Publications

  • Working with and assisting the Officers and Directors of the Association in organizing and leading activities and programs for members and students.
  • Supervising activities, programs, and publications for the organization, including:
  • A biannual peer-reviewed research journal and a quarterly newsletter for members
  • AATJ Websites and social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, etc)
  • Two annual national conferences for Japanese language educators
  • A program of webinars and other online events
  • A Japanese online exam for high school and college students of Japanese
  • An annual Japanese Language Proficiency Test administered in person at 18 locations around the United States to more than 7,000 learners of Japanese
  • Programs that benefit students of Japanese at all levels of instruction, including a Japanese National Honor Society, a New Year's Postcard Contest, and others.

What You Should Know

This position offers the opportunity for a hybrid work option.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this full-time position is $80,000-$85,000.

What We Require

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 3+ years of professional, job-related experience.
  • Professional or near-professional competence in both English and Japanese.

What You Will Need

  • Organizational skills, including project planning and management, budgeting, staff management, and delegation of work.
  • Financial Management Skills: Experience in budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • A commitment to, knowledge about, and passion for the work of the Association and for the traditions of Japanese language education in the United States.
  • Familiarity with office procedures and equipment and ability to use various software including Word, Excel, Quickbooks, Adobe, and Google Docs.
  • Commitment to the organization’s goals and efforts in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the profession.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Demonstrated experience managing a professional or academic organization, department, or work unit.
  • Experience in grant writing and managing grant-funded projects.
  • A master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is desirable.
