Description of Work
As the Beef Cow/Calf Unit Manager, you will:
  • Manage the feeding of cattle of three beef cow-calf units according to research protocols.
  • Develop herd health programs.
  • Manage the vaccination and treatment schedule of animals.
  • Plan and organize the scheduling of personnel to achieve maximum efficiency of the teaching and research units.
  • Lead record keeping of cow herds through the cowherd management software (i.e. registration, animal matings, DNA samples, genotyping, etc.)

This position is located at Eastern Nebraska Research Extension and Education Center near Mead, NE and Ithaca, NE. ENREEC is conveniently located within 30 minutes of both Lincoln and Omaha. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as a Research Manager-Husbandry.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in animal science, agriculture, or related field plus four years of experience in cow/calf management required. OR
  • Master’s degree in animal science or related field plus two years of experience in cow/calf management.
  • Knowledge of obstetrics and surgical techniques, livestock nutrition, genetics, physiology, reproduction and pasture management necessary.
  • Practical husbandry skills essential.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, technical, analytical, organizational, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Artificial Insemination certification required or ability to obtain with 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently essential.
  • Recordkeeping and computer skills necessary.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred but are not required:
  • Master’s degree in animal science or related field preferred.
