Description of Work
The School of Computing (SoC) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) is going through a strategic expansion and invites applications for one tenured faculty position at the rank of Full Professor to begin Fall 2025. The SoC offers a collegial and collaborative culture, with broad interdisciplinary research with other units across our campus. We seek exceptional candidates who can help lead our Robotics research and teaching programs.

As part of an exciting period of significant growth, the School hired 11 tenured/tenure-track faculty members between 2019 and 2024. This expansion complements the hiring by the College of Engineering, which has hired more than 65 new faculty in the last five years and plans to continue expanding the number of faculty in the coming years. We are committed to promoting inclusive excellence of our faculty and seek to attract and retain a high-performing and diverse workforce in which employees’ differences are respected and valued to better meet the varying needs of the diverse populations we serve.

Within the SoC, the NIMBUS lab is a leader in leveraging Uncrewed Aircraft Systems to interact in a field environment with numerous scientific and agricultural application areas. NIMBUS’ leadership and success have been built on the intersection of field robotics, human-robot interaction, and software engineering. UNL is taking a lead role in a $25 million federal award that will establish a Heartland Robotics Cluster and serve as an economic driver for Nebraska. The SoC is also a leader in IoT and Agricultural IoT, spearheading the Nebraska IoT Initiative through a public-private partnership. This includes collaborations on major infrastructure projects and the formation of the interlocal agency iLNK. SoC is enhancing research in Data Science, AI, and Machine Learning, launching a new Data Science undergraduate major, and aiming to develop leading programs in health, agriculture, biocomputing, and robotics. The School also leads a Cybersecurity Initiative to tackle security challenges with AI and ML techniques. Additionally, our Software Engineering group is recognized for its work in Empirical Software Engineering, Testing, and Formal Methods, and is expanding into areas like Mining Software Repositories, Software Security, and Human-centered Software Engineering.

UNL is Nebraska’s land-grant research university and ranks among Doctoral Universities with the Highest Research Activity [Carnegie CIHE]. UNL is centered in the flourishing community of Lincoln, the third-largest city in the Big Ten.
