Building Systems Maintenance has three levels of High Voltage Electricians, and the level is determined by a candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and applicable licensure.
High Voltage Electricians I, II, and III: All High Voltage Electricians assist with various utility electrical activities such as installation, maintenance, and repair of transformers and medium voltage switches, data collection and maintenance of electrical vaults, and State of Nebraska electrical code compliant electrical installation and lighting system maintenance and repair. Additionally, High Voltage Electricians interpret and use schematics and blueprint drawings to install and troubleshoot electrical conduit systems, wiring, and device termination, locate and flag underground electrical systems, complete work orders and utilize an electronic time keeping system, and assist with maintaining distribution gear and motor controls centers, and perform splicing and terminating of medium voltage cable.
High Voltage Electrician II: In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level II will work more independently and be given more complex duties including communicating concerns of safety, circuit changes, switching orders, loading issues,
GIS information, and other relative issues with the medium voltage distribution system to appropriate leadership, maintain battery banks, run rigid threaded conduit, and operate load rigging, heavy forklifts, bucket trucks, and other applicable machinery.
High Voltage Electrician III: In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level
III will act as a primary point of contact for high voltage concerns or emergencies, collaborate with
FPC officials, Code enforcement agencies,
LES (Lincoln Electric System), private contractors and engineers, and University departments, and confirm scope, schedule, and budget requirements of work assignments and coordinate changes. A level
III will also test and diagnose circuits in medium voltage electrical systems when problems and outages occur, verify accuracy of functions and coding of work orders, sustain Journeyman license, train, mentor, and verify work of others, contribute to fostering a positive work environment, motivate and encourage staff to improve, support leadership, and contribute to the development and implementation of departmental vision and goals.
All levels will be assigned to a rotating on-call schedule and urgent situations occasionally require after-hours work.
