The Opportunity:
We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Engineer, Mechanical R&D. This position works out of our Plano, TX location in the Neuromodulation Division. Our Neuromodulation business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum.
It sounds like science fiction: sending small electrical pulses to the spine to block pain signals or to the brain to suppress tremor. As a Senior R&D Engineer at Abbott Neuromodulation, you will have the opportunity to develop technology platforms that improve the lives of those suffering from chronic pain and movement disorders.

What You’ll Work On:
Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical and electro-mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment
Conceptualizes new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design
Develops new concepts from initial design to market release with cross-functional partners
Creates and submits novel design solutions that expand the intellectual property of the business
Conducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionality
Balances design for reliability, manufacturing, and cost efficiency
Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development
Prepares technical reports, analyses, recommendations, and presentations reflecting the status and results of projects in progress
Participates/contributes to technical reviews of mechanical designs
Reviews and coordinates vendor activities to support development
Establishes and cultivates an extensive network of support to facilitate completion of assignments
Exercises judgment in selecting innovative, practical methods to achieve problem resolution
Exhibits and instills decision-making based in objective engineering principles (analytical and empirical)
Develops test methods, models, and fixtures to evaluate designs
Multi-tasks, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a timely manner
Identifies, communicates, and mitigates project risks
Builds and maintains positive and cooperative relationships internally and externally
Ensures compliance to all applicable internal requirements and external regulations
Position may require up to 10% travel
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical discipline
5+ years of relevant product development or R&D work experience (preferably with implantable hardware)
Wide application of technical principles, practices, and procedures
Strong understanding of business unit function and cross group dependencies/relationships
Will perform this job in a quality system environment
Failure to adequately perform tasks can result in noncompliance with governmental regulations
Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors
Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Has a sound knowledge of various technical alternatives and their impact
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical discipline
Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (SolidWorks, ANSYS preferred)
Product development experience within a regulated environment (e.g. medical, aerospace, automotive, etc.)
Experience working with cross-functional teams and taking initiative to ensure successful outcomes
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated hands-on experience designing for manufacturing processes used in medical devices (e.g. biocompatible material selection, injection molding, machining, printed circuit board fabrication, extrusion, etc.)
Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Manufacturing)
Experience with statistical techniques (e.g. DOE, hypothesis testing, etc.)
Knowledge of design controls and regulations for medical device development
The base pay for this position is $72,700.00 – $145,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
