The Opportunity

Our Diagnostics business at Abbott Park (Lake County), IL, is seeking a Principal Bioinformatics Scientist II to join our Research and Development Team for Abbott Core Laboratory. This position requires working onsite 5 days a week. The primary function of this position is writing and designing code. The individual will meet with other developers and participate in daily scrum meetings where all developers collaborate. The role involves team-based software development, utilizing cloud computing, following agile product development methodologies, and managing data effectively.

What You’ll Do

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

  • Designs and conducts experiments, accomplishes established milestones and summarizes data, interprets, results and draws conclusions. Evaluates data using analytical methodologies to achieve results. Recommends options for future experiments. Presents scientific observations to others.

  • Trains lower-level scientists.

  • Expertise and Problem Solving: Leverages experience in biology, computer science, modeling, statistics, analytics and math to derive insights from large biological sequence data sets. Maintains strong knowledge of sequencing, automation, and cloud computing technologies, and their application. Identifies technical alternatives. Anticipates, recognizes and resolves technical problems.

  • Project Planning: Generate and champions new project ideas. Establishes project and leads project planning, updates and process improvements. Translates top-level goals to specific project level goals for individual team member. Establishes and reviews complex plans for multiple projects or activities. Liaise with Global Information Technology, Asset Management, and Software Quality on behalf of project stakeholders. Plans resource allocation and distribution.

  • Scientific Leadership: Submits ideas for inventions; publishes; innovates through patent filings and/or scientific publications.

  • Economic Profitability: Provide direction to project team to meet economic profitability (EP) profile for the project (product cost analysis).

  • Documentation: Appropriately documents experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. or B.A. plus 5 years of relevant experience is required, or M.S. plus 3 years of experience with equivalency.

  • Proven track record of research that advances technology within a division.

  • Ability to hypothesize, design experiments, draw conclusions, and provide direction to junior team members.

  • Advanced computer skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of multiple analytical instruments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. plus 6 years experience of relevant experience.
  • Strong experience in Bioinformatics preferred.

The base pay for this position is $109,300.00 – $218,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
